In honor of Florence Nightingale’s 200th birthday, 2020 has been designated “Year of the Nurse” by the World Health Organization. This global celebration commemorates the founder of modern nursing who laid the foundation of professional nursing in 1960, when she created the world’s first secular nursing school in Britain.

As a Magnet recognized institution, we witness the dedication, leadership and compassion of our nurses every day, but their commitment was never more apparent than during the pandemic.  In the face of extraordinary uncertainty and at great personal risk, they rose to the challenge with courage, selflessness and ingenuity. They cared for our most vulnerable patients who were in the hospital alone, comforted and counseled families through difficult decisions, and took care of one another as the pandemic began to take a toll on their own well-being.  Our nurses were an inspiration to us all.

Betty Wold-Johnson, philanthropistSomeone who thought every year should be the Year of the Nurse was the late Mrs. Betty Johnson, with whom PMPH was fortunate enough to have known well.  Her philanthropy enabled us to make transformational changes in our programs and facilities over the past decades, and among Mrs. Johnson’s most central passions was nursing excellence.  She always understood the critical role nurses play in healthcare and the importance in investing in their continued education, training and futures.

In recognition of our centennial anniversary, Mrs. Johnson made a $1 million commitment as a Challenge Grant to support continued nursing excellence at Princeton Health. This grant will create an endowment to help ensure that resources remain available in perpetuity to provide the necessary training and advancement opportunities for our nurses to remain competitive and leading the region in patient care. Specifically, this endowment will support Scholarships & Continuing Education, Research & Innovation, our Nursing Residency Program as well as nursing Succession Planning.

To take advantage of the matching grant, if you would like to make a donation in honor of a nurse or in support of nursing education, please call the Foundation Office at 609.252.8710, visit the website at www.princetonhcs.org/foundation or email us at PMPH-Foundation@PennMedicine.Upenn.edu.

RN’s make up the highest percentage of entire healthcare workforce in the United States. The U.S. is projected to experience a shortage of Registered Nurses as a result of longer life expectancies.
