Investment Expert Makes Gift in Will, Urges Others

Richard O. Scribner, Esq., has had a notable career as a lawyer and securities industry executive before a second career in the nonprofit sector and is quite emphatic about making a will and including charitable gifts—as he and his wife, Inez Scribner, have done with Princeton Medical Center Foundation.

When asked why it is so important to have a will, Dick related an unfortunate circumstance that occurred when he was a young lawyer. “A partner in the firm with whom I’d often worked died intestate. Ironically, his legal specialty was trusts and estates. Why did he die without leaving a will? One can only guess: he meant to do it, he felt terribly guilty about not doing it, but somehow he never quite got around to doing it; and then it was too late.

“If you value your family and your own peace of mind, don’t put off making a will,” Dick remarks. “A will allows me to make a carefully considered plan for the distribution of my assets so that upon my death those assets will go to members of my family and selected charities in exactly the proportions I want.

“As part of my plan, I can also make decisions about gifts I want to provide for right now through charitable bequests. Those set-asides help me in my overall financial planning and ensure that my charitable impulses don’t go unrealized in the event of my untimely demise.”

Dick is a member of Princeton Health Board of Trustees and is its former Chairman. He and Inez are members of the 1919 Society and are longtime Princeton supporters and volunteers. He has served on the Princeton University Board of Trustees, and she has volunteered for Princeton’s art museum and infirmary.
