Adult Co-Occurring Diagnosis

Behavioral Health Behavioral Health

Addiction is a chronic, relapsing disease that is driven by an abnormal response of the brain’s reward system. Many adults with addictions also suffer from co-occurring emotional or mental health issues, including depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. They may use various substances to self-medicate and numb the brain’s response to emotional pain or trauma, eventually compromising the brain’s natural pain and stress system.
