The Lymphedema Program at Penn Medicine Princeton Rehabilitation has expanded its outpatient treatment services thanks to a donation from an anonymous patient who turned to us for care after surgery. As someone who has experienced this disorder themselves, this generous donor has helped facilitate a tangible change in the care we are able to offer. This gift has enabled Penn Medicine Princeton Health to be a leader in lymphedema treatment in the Central New Jersey area.

Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of water and protein-rich fluids in extremities (mostly arms and legs) that may occur due to cancer-related surgery and treatments, congenital disorders, and/or vascular disorders. There is no cure for this debilitating condition, and treatment is a lifelong process that includes repeated visits to a multidisciplinary team of specialists that should include a certified lymphedema therapist.

Lymphedema is a serious condition that is often under-served and under-diagnosed in the United States. Community philanthropy has provided funding for our therapists to obtain advanced certifications in this specialized field and for the purchase of the newest technology to treat patients. These funds will also be used to increase awareness of the condition and foster collaboration with general practitioners and specialists through grand rounds and clinical education sessions.
