VolunTeen Opportunities

Through our VolunTEEN Program, our student volunteers have diverse opportunities to gain knowledge of the health care field by practicing valuable leadership and transferable skills while giving back to the community. We invite young adults, ages 15-17 who have completed their freshman year to join our team.

We accept new teen applications twice a year for the spring and summer sessions. See below for requirements and steps to volunteer. Space is limited. For more information, contact Volunteer Services at 609.853.6010 or email us at volunteer@pennmedicine.upenn.edu.

What Qualities Make For A Good Volunteer?

The most important requirement to be a volunteer is a friendly, customer-focused attitude. Excellent communication skills are required. We are looking for mature individuals who are responsible, dependable, passionate, and committed! Candidates who have a willingness to serve with a professional and positive attitude toward patients, visitors, volunteers, and staff will make great volunteers.

What Opportunities Are Available To Teen Volunteers?

We will discuss your interests and goals during the interview process. Placements are based on organizational need and the qualifications, skills, background, and availability of the individual volunteer – placements are not guaranteed. Assignments for teen volunteers consist primarily of clerical, administrative, supportive, and logistical tasks.

Shadowing/observation opportunities are not available.

VolunTEEN Sessions run parallel to traditional school semesters. VolunTEENS serve once a week for a 3-hour shift, are expected to serve for the entire session (roughly 18-20 weeks per semester), and are required to maintain excellent attendance. Missing more than 3 weeks of service per semester is grounds for dismissal from the program. Summer Session, in general, will run 9-10 weeks between the end of June through August and only 2 missed sessions are permitted.

What Is the Process For Volunteering?

The volunteer selection and placement process is designed to keep our patients, caregivers and staff safe while providing you with a meaningful, rewarding, and enriching experience. Due to the volume of applications received, Volunteer Services may not contact all applicants. Teens are expected to take responsibility for the entire application process; calls from parents or other family members are not accepted.
