Expert care from a multidisciplinary team
Penn Medicine Princeton Health has earned advanced certification in total hip and total knee replacement from The Joint Commission, the nation's oldest healthcare accrediting body.
Part of Penn Medicine Princeton Health, PMC has been providing outstanding orthopedic care and joint replacement for decades, and is proud to be home to the Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement.
The Center is led by a team of board certified orthopedic surgeons, a dedicated nurse navigator and physician assistants, advanced practice nurses, specially trained nurses, skilled physical therapists and an outstanding staff. It combines personalized, supportive care with the latest techniques in hip and knee replacement surgery and recovery.
The expert surgeons at PMC perform over 1,600 joint replacements each year. A number of procedures are performed with enhanced precision thanks to the use of robot-assisted technology. The precision of this approach may allow the patient to benefit from fewer complications, more precise implant positioning, and the potential for faster recovery with less pain.
We are with you, every step of the way
The experts at the Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement have a comprehensive program to help eliminate your pain and restore your strength and mobility, so you can reclaim your life as soon as possible. We provide testing and patient education prior to surgery, and rehabilitative therapy and safe, effective pain management afterward.
You will be informed about your care and actively involved with it at every step. We even suggest you ask a family member or friend to play a very special role as your coach, as you prepare for surgery and recover from it.
Same-day procedures
The Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement offers same-day, minimally invasive outpatient procedures for partial knee replacement, total knee replacement, anterior hip replacement and posterior hip replacement. Candidates for this surgery must be highly motivated to achieve a rapid recovery and have a dependable support network at home. They must also be in relatively good health, with conditions such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure well controlled.
Many patients qualify for a same-day procedure. Following completion of their surgery, the patient is discharged to the comfort of his/her own home later in the day. From there, they may receive physical therapy via outpatient rehabilitation or at home, depending on how well they are progressing.
Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model
PMC participates in a Medicare initiative called the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) model. The CJR model aims to support better and more efficient care for beneficiaries undergoing lower-extremity joint replacement procedures, commonly referred to as hip and knee replacements. The following physicians are currently collaborating with PMC to participate in the CJR model:
- Hari Bezwada, MD, FAAOS
- Brian M. Culp, MD, FAAOS, Medical Director of the Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement
- Harvey E. Smires, MD
- Brian M. Vannozzi, MD, FAAOS
- Anthony Boniello, MD
PMC works closely with the doctors and other healthcare providers and suppliers who care for patients during and after their hospital stay and extending through the recovery period. To learn more about the CJR model, please visit https://innovation.cms.gov/initiatives/cjr.

The Jim Craigie Center for Joint Replacement was made possible by a gift from Jim Craigie, who had both his hips replaced at Princeton Medical Center. Mr. Craigie was so pleased with the quality of the care he received – and the improved quality of his life – that he made a gift to establish this extraordinary center.
