What is a Doula?
A doula is a trained professional who offers continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to mothers before, during, and after labor and childbirth. Their role is to assist you in achieving the healthiest and most satisfying birth experience possible. We understand the importance of having the support you need during your birthing experience. If you have enlisted the services of a doula for support, please take note of the following guidelines for your stay:
Guidelines for Doula Support:
- Each patient may have one doula present during labor, in addition to two support people.
- The doula may provide support during postpartum care.
- Only one adult (either a support person or doula) is permitted to spend the night with the patient.
- The doula is allowed in the labor room and tub room. However, they are not permitted in the operating room unless they are the main support person.
- The doula may assist the patient with breathing techniques, relaxation, and labor coaching.
- Doula certification is required to provide support in our facility.
- The doula is not permitted to perform vaginal exams on the patient, remove the patient from fetal monitoring without approval from a registered nurse/physician/certified nurse-midwife, provide medical advice, or interfere with the provider's plan of care for the patient.
- Any doula unable to adhere to these guidelines may be asked to leave the facility.
