University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro (UMCPP) developed its Art for Healing initiative—the acquisition of artwork to be displayed in our new hospital—to foster the healing process. Through your gift, carefully selected art will bring comfort and joy to patients, family members, and staff.
Scientific studies confirm the benefits of art. In particular, images depicting nature, such as savannahs, still water, and non-threatening wildlife, are stress-reducing and often health-inducing. Art of this type can decrease patients’ anxiety, cause them to perceive waiting times as shorter, and enable them to go home sooner. It is documented that many patients exposed to the art request fewer pain medications. Art also increases staff satisfaction, and in doing so, aids retention.

Professional art consultant Rosalyn Cama, along with community experts who constitute the interdisciplinary Art for Healing Committee, carefully guides art selection through an evidence-based process. Works of art, most by local artists, are wisely selected for purchase according to specific criteria. A healthcare designer for more than 30 years, Ms. Cama chairs the Board of the Center for Health Design (CHD). UMCPP has become a member of CHD’s research program, The Pebble Project. The CHD held its most recent annual symposium here, and the attendees (architects, designers, and healthcare executives from around the country) had high praise for the new hospital.
At the symposium, Bob Hillier, an Art for Healing committee member and one of the architects for the new hospital, remarked, “The concept of compelling and thoughtfully placed artworks enhancing the healing process within the evidence-based architecture of UMCPP has attracted the attention of healthcare leaders from around the globe.” He added, “Your own gift can help complete our art acquisition process, ensuring the hospital’s growing reputation as a remarkable destination for healing.”
