Princeton Health Renews Focus on Sustainability
Penn Medicine Princeton Health, which already operates a state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly hospital campus, has hired a Director of Sustainability to guide efforts to intensify sustainability initiatives across the health system.
Greg Evans, the new Director of Sustainability, has 30 years of experience as a consultant in environmental management, healthcare, and construction management. He has earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of Pennsylvania and holds a Certificate in Corporate Sustainability from New York University’s Stern Center for Sustainable Business.
Last summer, Mr. Evans was commissioned to conduct an extensive analysis of initiatives undertaken at Princeton Health between 2012 and 2019 and make recommendations for a comprehensive sustainability strategy through the year 2030.
Hospitals and laboratories emit 4.4 percent of all greenhouse gases and produce more than five million tons of waste annually. Princeton Medical Center (PMC), which opened in 2012, was designed with the intent to reduce its carbon footprint, notably through development of a cogeneration plant and a solar installation to meet the hospital campus’ energy needs. Princeton Health also has worked to reduce waste, increase recycling, and use safer cleaning chemicals.
Princeton Health is looking to incorporate additional initiatives that promote environmental sustainability while also benefiting patients, staff and providers, and the organization itself. The initial focus will include methods to reduce energy usage and a deeper analysis of how Princeton Health procures, consumes, and disposes of — or reprocesses — supplies.
Additional areas of interest include reducing waste generation and water use, purchasing more sustainable foods, and investigating the feasibility of installing electric vehicle charging stations on the PMC campus in Plainsboro.
