Palliative Care

In the past, palliative care was equated with end of life—but it is much more. Palliative care is comprehensive, specialized medical care that is focused on symptom relief. This type of care is holistic, and can include the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs associated with serious illness and chronic diseases. The ultimate goal of palliative care is to establish goals of care with the patient and improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.

The palliative care physician consults with patients and families who have been diagnosed with a serious illness and works directly with the patient’s primary oncology treatment team.
