UMCP Recognized for Excellence in Cancer Care

The Cancer Program at University Medical Center of Princeton (UMCP) has earned its second consecutive Outstanding Achievement Award, an honor presented by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) to recognize programs that strive for excellence in treating patients with cancer.
UMCP was among 75 hospitals and cancer centers nationwide to earn 2014 Outstanding Achievement Awards, which were announced by the CoC this month. The honorees represent 15 percent of the cancer programs surveyed in 2014.
The CoC, part of the American College of Surgeons, accredits more than 1,500 cancer programs in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Accreditation surveys are conducted every three years.
"This is a remarkable achievement for our Cancer Program and a clear message to our patients that they can get outstanding care right here," said James Demetriades, Vice President, Operations, for Princeton HealthCare System. "Our staff and a team of specialists—including surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, radiologists and pathologists—collaborate to determine an appropriate treatment plan for each individual. Patients have access to clinical trials, state-of-the-art technology and services such as an oncology nurse navigator who works with patients and their families to better understand their diagnosis as well as the treatment options and supports available to them."
UMCP earned the Outstanding Achievement Award by attaining the best possible results on last year's accreditation survey. The Cancer Program met or exceeded all applicable quality care standards and earned seven of a possible seven commendations. UMCP also received a 2011 Outstanding Achievement Award, following its previous survey. Only 32 cancer programs nationwide earned the award in both years.
The Cancer Program at UMCP is advised by a committee that includes program staff, PHCS leadership, representatives of community partners and staff members or managers from many different clinical and non-clinical departments at PHCS, such as Rehabilitation, Case Management, Social Work, Pharmacy, Nutrition, Nursing Education, Community Education & Outreach, Marketing and the PHCS Foundation. Twelve physicians serve on the committee representing various disciplines, including medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology, palliative medicine, pathology and several surgical specialties.
