UMCP Encourages Community Members to Walk from Obesity

April 25, 2016
University Medical Center of Princeton (UMCP) will host the ASMBS Foundation Walk from ObesitySM on May 22 to raise awareness about the health dangers of obesity and funding to support research and education programs.

Walkers of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to participate in the 1.2-mile, noncompetitive walk. Children under the age of 12 can walk for free with a registered parent or guardian. The children may also participate in a coloring contest.

For details and to register, visit www.princetonhealthinmotion.com.

Those who register online by May 3 can qualify for $10 per person Early Bird Registration by entering the promo code EARLYBIRD. Beginning May 4, registration will cost $25 per person. Online registration ends at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 20.

Everyone who registers will receive a Walk from Obesity T-shirt and set a minimum fundraising goal of $100. Walkers are not required to raise the full $100 to participate. Walkers may register on the day of the event for $35.

Check-in will open at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 22, and the walk is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. The walk will pass through UMCP and across the grounds of the hospital campus. Walkers are encouraged to set their own pace and finish as much or as little of the course as they can.

Before and after the walk, participants can learn more about healthy eating, active living and obesity; win prizes; and enjoy healthy snacks, kids crafts and face painting. Radio station WPST-FM will broadcast live from the event.

The event is presented by Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) Community Education & Outreach and the Center for Bariatric Surgery & Metabolic Medicine at UMCP.

The ASMBS Foundation initiated the Walk from Obesity in 2003 as an annual fundraiser. Cities across the nation host walks each spring and fall.
