UMCP Earns Re-Designation as a Magnet® Recognized Organization

Magnet Recognized - UMCP

University Medical Center of Princeton (UMCP) has earned re-designation as a Magnet® recognized organization, a prestigious status signifying nursing excellence that is held by only 469 hospitals worldwide.

“When it comes to nursing care, Magnet is the gold standard,” said Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) President and CEO Barry S. Rabner. “This designation places us in a select group of hospitals across the country and demonstrates our commitment to pursuing excellence. We are gratified to have earned this recognition for a second time.”

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, announced UMCP’s re-designation last month. The announcement follows an application and review process that included a three-day site visit to the hospital in July.

The ANCC developed the Magnet Recognition Program to acknowledge superior patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional practice. UMCP first earned Magnet status in 2012.

As part of its Magnet re-designation, UMCP was recognized for two exemplary practices:

  • The Behavioral Emergency Response Team (BERT), an initiative designed to increase clinical nurses’ confidence and competence in caring for patients with behavioral health needs.
  • PHCS Community Education & Outreach, which provides approximately 1,700 community programs each year, including free health screenings and educational sessions led by doctors, nurses and other health professionals.

In addition to Magnet recognition, UMCP is accredited by The Joint Commission and holds specialized accreditations and designations from organizations such as the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer; the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery; the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities; Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE); the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers; and the American College of Radiology.

UMCP ranks in the top 5 percent in New Jersey and top 10 percent nationally for overall inpatient satisfaction, according to patient surveys administered by Press Ganey Associates. U.S. News & World Report ranked UMCP among the top 10 hospitals in New Jersey and top 20 in the New York metropolitan area for three years in a row.

UMCP also earned a spot on the 2017 edition of HealthCare’s Most Wired, a list published annually by the American Hospital Association to recognize hospitals that effectively use information technology to improve quality, increase access and promote patient engagement.
