Joan L. Schreyer and Barry S. Rabner, President and CEO, Princeton HealthCare System, pose with a portrait of Mrs. Schreyer and her late husband, William A. Schreyer. The portrait will be displayed in the newly renamed William A. and Joan L. Schreyer Education Center at University Medical Center of Princeton.

The Education Center at University Medical Center of Princeton (UMCP) has been renamed the William A. and Joan L. Schreyer Education Center to acknowledge the Princeton residents' generous gift to the Design for Healing campaign.

The Schreyers have served Princeton HealthCare System (PHCS) in various capacities over four decades, and their gift was among the first pledged to Design for Healing, the capital campaign to support construction of a new hospital in Plainsboro.

Mrs. Schreyer, along with her daughter, grandchild and family friends, attended a reception and dedication ceremony at UMCP on September 20. They unveiled a portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Schreyer by local artist John Ennis that will be displayed in the Schreyer Education Center.

"Our Education Center enables countless hours of training and provides a meeting space for the community to attend education classes and for our boards to hold committee meetings," said Kim J. Pimley, Chairman of the PHCS Board of Trustees. "It is estimated that more than 50,000 people utilize the space each year. The Education Center is a vital, varied resource, and it's very fitting that it will bear the Schreyers' names to recognize their importance to PHCS over the years and to express our gratitude for everything they have done."

Mr. Schreyer, who rose from trainee to Chairman and CEO during a 45-year career at Merrill Lynch & Co., served as a PHCS Trustee from 1973 to 1981, including six years as Chairman of the Board. He served on the PHCS Foundation Board of Directors from 1985 to 2003, becoming Chairman in 1995. Mr. Schreyer was Honorary Chairman of Design for Healing.

Mr. Schreyer published a memoir titled Bullish on America in 2009, following an economic downturn. In the memoir, he exhibited his eternal optimism about America and its economy.

"The pessimists are correct at any given points in history," he wrote, "but never over the long term."
