For the fourth year in a row, Princeton Medical Center (PMC) earned the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, which is granted by the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) to hospitals that demonstrate a commitment to high-quality stroke care.

PMC earned two additional, related awards from the AHA/ASA — Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite and Target: Type 2 DiabetesSM Honor Roll.

Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. Early detection and treatment are key to saving lives, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times. The Get With The Guidelines–Stroke program helps hospitals improve stroke care by adhering to the latest evidence-based guidelines.

Hospitals are evaluated on quality measures that focus on appropriate medications, treatment methods, and patient education and counseling.

“The Get With The Guidelines program provides a structure for consistent, high-quality care, which is so important when someone may be experiencing a stroke and every second counts,” said Paul K. Kaiser, MD, Medical Director of PMC’s Stroke Program. “Expediting diagnosis and treatment is the key to giving every patient the best possible chance to recover.”

Hospitals must meet or exceed the guidelines for 24 consecutive months to earn their first Gold award. PMC has maintained that level of excellence now for 60 consecutive months.

To receive the Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite award, PMC met specific criteria reducing the time between when an eligible patient arrives at the hospital and is treated with clot-busting medication.

PMC earned the AHA/ASA’s Target: Type 2 DiabetesSM Honor Roll award by meeting specific, evidence-based criteria that improve outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes who are hospitalized for cardiovascular disease or stroke.

The Joint Commission and the AHA/ASA have designated PMC as a Primary Stroke Center, recognizing the hospital’s exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for patients who have experienced strokes.
