New Treatment Option at UMCP Offers Long-Term Relief from Chronic Reflux

July 14, 2015
Anish Sheth, MD
University Medical Center of Princeton (UMCP) now offers Stretta Therapy, a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure that provides long-term relief from symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease, better known as GERD or acid reflux.

GERD affects approximately 30 percent of American adults, with frequent heartburn being the most common symptom. For most people, GERD is treatable with lifestyle or diet changes. But some need medication or even surgery to alleviate their symptoms.

Anish A. Sheth, MD, Chief of Gastroenterology at UMCP, said Stretta Therapy has proven to be a safe, effective treatment option for appropriately selected patients.

"Stretta offers new hope for patients who cannot find relief through medications," said Dr. Sheth, who is board certified in gastroenterology and treats patients with a variety of gastroesophageal conditions. "In the past, surgery was often the only option. Now, we have a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis. Patients are typically back to their normal routines by the next day."

The procedure uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to strengthen and improve the function of a valve known as the lower esophageal sphincter, which helps to prevent reflux. In clinical studies, Stretta Therapy received a 90 percent patient satisfaction score and demonstrated symptom relief lasting 4 to 10 years.

The symptom relief is not immediate. Dr. Sheth said it often takes a few months for patients to experience the maximum benefit. During that time, patients may be prescribed medications as needed.

Dr. Sheth noted that Stretta Therapy is the latest addition to a comprehensive Esophageal Program at UMCP, which includes the full range of diagnostic and therapeutic services.
